simplify, edition #9

Do I need a website? Your competition most likely has one… and your customers are finding them!

Changing habits... For years, your customers relied on the yellow pages and other print directories to find local businesses. However, consumers' habits have dramatically changed over the past decade or so. Many people use a search engine like Google or Yahoo to find suppliers. The Internet does a great job of leveling out the playing field and lets the smaller guys compete evenly with the bigger guys, or at the very least allows you to be part of the game…

It is almost expected that any professionally run business will have a website. You think that because you are a small business you don't need a website? Think again! Here are some reasons why a small business should consider having a website.

  • Increase awareness and get your name and message out there. Let your website do the work for you 24 hours a day and 7days a week! A website is a perfect way to allow your prospective customers to look up the information they need, when they need it.
  • Your online footprint. A website allows you to present a powerful image of your business. It allows people to find your business, understand your offer and make a decision to do business with you.
  • Educate your customers and establish credibility. The first step of any sale is getting a customer familiar with what you are selling. A website is a great opportunity to provide information on who you are and what you do, provide useful information, testimonials, directions, trials, demos, downloads or other content that speaks to, informs and educates your target audience. In this day and age more and more people are looking on the Internet to get the information they need to make educated buying decisions.
  • Establish a relationship with your customers. People generally prefer to do business with people they "know." On your website you can give people the opportunity to get to know your business (and perhaps you) and feel more comfortable with you.
  • Generate leads and increase sales. Expand your customer base with the wider reach of the Internet. The Internet knows no physical boundaries and you can open up opportunities to attract business in other geographical areas, more specialised or even international markets.
  • Get Referrals. Referrals are a number one way for small businesses to get new customers. On your website you can add a "refer a friend" link where your customers or visitors can send your link to a friend who may be interested in your products or services.
  • Integrated marketing. A catchy mailshot, an attractive website, a great ad: on their own, each one can have an effect in their own individual way. But when combined, all reinforcing the same message, they can make a huge impact.
  • Give your customers a voice. A website can prove a great means to obtain feedback from customers in the shape and form of testimonials, customer references, surveys or forums.
  • Right here, right now. A website lets you put your marketing information online so it is instantly available or can be downloaded in the form of data sheets or an online brochure. Plus you never get stuck with stacks of out-of-date print literature, saving additional cost.
  • Gather information. Everything you do as a small business is based on understanding who your customers are. A website provides a great source to gather contact information for e-Marketing. Continual contact with prospects fosters relationships, keeps your contacts informed and leads to more customers! Also, data from web traffic can tell you where your customer is coming from and which keywords they used to find you. Incorporating analytics is invaluable to positioning your business to your target market.
  • Websites can be a very cost effective selling tool. A website will prove to be a long-term sales, marketing and promotional tool for a relatively small upfront cost.

The bigger picture. Be found on the Internet, communicate your message, stimulate interest, turn visitors into prospects and customers. Even the smallest company can look just as big and professional on the Internet as any large corporate. Let your website do the work for you…

message from the editor

Hello and welcome to simplify, our newsletter, edition #9 November 2008.

As part of our 'simplify web design series' we shall look at how to get up and running with your website; whether your site is 'dressed to kill' or if your current website 'kills your business'.

We will also discuss how to choose a domain name and how to write effective web copy; and look at your website through the eyes of those little crawly search engine spiders. Stay tuned.

Enjoy this edition!

Your Simplicity.

Let your website do the work for you!

Who? Simplicity is a small web design and creative marketing company. For whom? We specialise in working with small, medium and start-up businesses. Why? [Image Works] Branding & Brand Identity: Define who you are, what you can see, touch, feel, hear and watch.
