Who? Simplicity is a small web design and creative marketing company. For whom? We specialise in working with small, medium and start-up businesses. Why? Small feet, big shoes; just because you’re a small business does not mean you don’t need to get your message out there in a big way. What’s it all about? [Image Works] Branding & Brand Identity: Define who you are, what you can see, touch, feel, hear and watch. Why dress your website for Christmas?

I remember the times when I used to be driven around as a child admiring the Christmas decorations in the neighbourhood, fairy lights in Christmas trees, Santa Claus sliding down the drain pipe, Rudolph and a whole army of snowmen lining up the front path. This year, instead of driving around, I surfed around some exciting 'Christmassy' websites. I asked myself the question, why is it important to decorate a website for Christmas or for any festive occasion for that matter?

I guess there are in fact two main reasons why one should consider dressing a website for Christmas. All too often, website owners tend to forget to respect visitors to a website as human beings. By dressing a website in light of the current festivities, one can commemorate these special events, make the user feel welcome, comfortable and valued as a 'human being', and even evoke emotions and feelings amongst its users rather than just being a marketing communications or sales tool.

The other reason I would like to highlight is that any website dressed for the season will in fact appear much more current, up-to-date ,'topical', and in touch with its visitors.

Holiday decorations on your website can brighten up your design and allow you to connect with the visitors to your website. Special decorations can evoke a feeling of happiness and increase the joy of use of a website. A website can be decorated for any type of occasion, beyond the traditional, religious and national holidays, think Christmas, Valentine's Day; why not bring your website in line with seasonal themes such as summer, autumn, New Year-New Start? Just remember to keep your website dressed and in line with most of your website visitors' believes and thoughts. Go on, put a smile on your website visitor's faces and make the Internet a more humane place.

It's not too late, here are some last minute ideas how to dress your site for Christmas: put some snowflakes on your site, let your logo wear a Santa's hat, place a Christmas wreath or some tinsel on your home page. For example, come Christmas, take a look at Google's site, the Google logo will always be decorated in line with the current festivities or any special occasion.

You don't have to go overboard, some simple decorations can go a long way without disrupting the user experience.

Here are some more ideas how you can connect with your customers and prospects this Christmas:

- Create a dedicated special Christmas landing page on your website

- Send out a special Christmas newsletter or message to your opted-in contact list

- Give your customers something 'special' for Christmas, show them you care

- Don't forget to send out Christmas cards to your valued customers

And remember, when you put your Christmas tree away, your website Christmas decorations should come down too.

Simplicity wishes you and your families a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
